Frequently Asked Questions

Q.
ADT Security Services, Brinks Home Security, Broadview Security and many others advertise that they offer a free security system and $99 installation fee with monitoring. Does CoastSecurityServices.com offer a free security system?

A.
Every security company, including CoastSecurityServices.com, requires monthly monitoring as part of the $99 installation offer. We believe the ads offering a free system - $850 value are misleading. Try buying the system for $99 from ADT without monitoring and see what happens. We believe in being clear and direct. The system we provide is not free. Your investment is $99 plus monitoring at $24.95 per month for 36 months on approved credit. Payments are billed to a credit card 3 months in advance. Local permits may apply.

Q.
Are there any advantages to door and window sensors and glass break detectors over one or two interior motion detectors?

A.
Yes. Door and window sensors and glass break detectors trigger an alarm before the criminal enters your home or business. A motion detector triggers an alarm after the criminal has entered. If you are home, it may make a difference. If you are not home, it makes less of a difference. In any event, a security alarm sign and window decals are designed to deter the criminal from attempting an entry. When a criminal sees a burglar alarm sign, he will not know whether you have motion detectors or perimeter sensors.

Q.
Is it true that hard - wired burglar alarm systems can be disabled in seconds?

A.
If you are a burglar alarm technician and inside the house, the answer is yes. Otherwise, the answer is no. Security alarm companies that offer only wireless systems sometimes use this tactic to sell their product. The truth is that wireless and hard - wired security systems have both advantages and disadvantages. You should consult with a knowledgeable security consultant to determine what type of system is best for you. CoastSecurityServices.com offers both wireless and hard- wired burglar alarm systems.

Q.

Q.
How can you offer monitoring fees for 20% less than ADT Security Services, Brink's Home Security, Broadview Security and the other mega companies?

A.
We don't spend millions of dollars on national television advertising and constant massive mailings. We use our resources to provide high quality equipment and first rate service.

Q.
Will my monthly service charge increase in the future?

A.
Some security alarm companies are well known for substantially increasing their monitoring fee after two or three years.

When you agree to have CoastSecurityServices.com install and monitor your alarm system, you are guaranteed, in writing, that your monthly monitoring cost will not increase for ten years.

Q.
Why are you willing to guarantee that our monitoring fee will not be increased for ten years?

A.
We want your business long term.

Q.
What happens if I press a manual panic button?

A.
The monitoring station will immediately call the local police and will then call the people on the contact list provided to us. Not a second will be wasted.

Q.
Do I need to test my security alarm system from time to time?

A.
Yes. Generally, you should test your system monthly. Specific testing instructions will be provided to you when your security alarm system is installed.

Q.
Will my pets set off a motion detector?

A.
No. Our motion detectors are set and installed so that pets will not set off the security alarm system.

Q.
When will my quarterly billings start?

A.
The first month's service will be prorated and then three month's service will be added and charged to your credit card. Thereafter, quarterly billings are charged approximately ten days before the beginning of a new quarter.

Q.
Do I need to get a security permit before I order my security system?

A.
No. However, if your city requires a security alarm permit, you should obtain it promptly after the installation.

Q.
I recently met with an ADT Security representative about a $99 security system. He tried to sell me several upgrades. Is this a standard practice?

A.
In all fairness to ADT Security, their $99 system does exactly what it is intended to do, but there are many valuable upgrades that are also available. All security firms including ADT and CoastSecurityServices.com make it a practice to inform prospective clients about all available upgrades and methods of protecting your family.

Q.
Will I receive a warranty from CoastSecurityServices.com?

A.
Absolutely. You will receive a one year warranty that covers everything except the battery. Not all security firms offer a warranty on both equipment and labor.

Q.
Can I get a security system if I rent my home?

A.
Yes. A wireless burglar alarm system would be ideal to protect you, your property and your loved ones.

Q.
What should I do if my carbon monoxide alarm goes off?

A.
If illness is not a factor, you should:
  1. Turn off the alarm;
  2. Turn off all sources of combustion such as furnaces, fireplaces, ovens and the gas range;
  3. Open all doors and windows; and then
  4. Call a licensed, insured contractor who is qualified to investigate the source of the carbon monoxide so that the source can be safely eliminated.
If anyone feels ill, you should:
  1. Have everyone, including pets, leave the house immediately;
  2. Call 911. Describe who is ill and any symptoms. Follow all instructions that are given;
  3. Do not enter the house without approval of the fire department; and then
  4. Call a licensed, insured contractor who is qualified to investigate the source of the carbon monoxide so that the source can be safely eliminated.

Q.
What can I do to protect my family from carbon monoxide poisoning?

A.
The risk can be greatly minimized by following these steps:
  • Install a carbon monoxide alarm with an audible warning signal immediately outside of each bedroom and near any other sleeping areas. Also, install an alarm inside the home near any door that opens directly from an attached garage.
  • Do not use a charcoal cooking device inside your home and do not use the gas range or oven to heat your home.
  • Do not let your car idle in the garage even if the door is open. Carbon monoxide can build up even with normal circulation.
  • Have all fuel burning appliances, fireplaces and furnaces checked for leaks by a licensed, insured contractor for leaks at least once each year, preferably just before winter.
  • As a condition of purchasing a home, have a qualified inspector check all fuel burning appliances, fireplaces and furnaces.

Q.
Is it possible for me to be able to view what my surveillance camera is seeing on my laptop computer or cell phone?

A.
Absolutely. Many people use remote video surveillance to monitor child care providers at their home and employees at their business location. Remote video surveillance cameras are also often utilized by people whose homes are located in high risk fire areas.

Q.
We recently purchased a very professional looking but phony "security alarm sign" at a swap meet for placement in front of our home. We are assuming the sign will be a deterrent to burglars even though it is not tied to a monitoring station. Do you see any flaws in our reasoning? It certainly didn't cost much.

A.
While the majority of people doing business at swap meets are honest and legitimate, swap meets are where large numbers of professional burglars sell their stolen goods. These stolen goods are taken from homes and business locations like yours. Some professional burglars make it their business to learn which signs are real and which are fakes. Swap meets are the place they can get this information. The fake signs effectively say - come on in - we don't have a monitored security alarm system.

Q.
For several years we had a Westec Security Alarm System. When they went out of business, we did not find a new monitoring company, but we did keep the sign in our front yard as a deterrent. How effective is the sign without a monitoring agreement?

A.
There is no reliable way to answer your question even when the sign names a security company that is in business. Your Westec sign may deter some unsophisticated burglars, but many hard core professional criminals make it their business to know what security companies are out of business. When they see a Westec or Lone Star sign, it's like saying - come in - we're not being monitored!

The safety of your family is too important to risk. There is no substitute for a monitored security alarm system from a highly recognized firm like CoastSecurityServices.com.

Q.
What is the approximate cost to protect the residents of a twenty unit condominium building with high quality exterior grade surveillance cameras?

A.
Depending on the configuration of the building and other physical factors, the average cost would range between $1,500 and $5,000 or $75 to $250 per unit. If the condominium association was to lease the equipment for 5 years, the monthly cost would range from $40.00 to $133.33 per month.

Q.
Can I get an extra security yard sign for my side yard??

A.
Absolutely. There is no additional cost. We want it clear that your home and family are protected.

Q.
What is the most common profile of burglars, robbers, and home invasion criminals?

A.
Young men who have an insatiable need for drug money.

Q.
What happens if a criminal cuts my phone line?

A.
While the chance of this happening is less than being struck by lightning two days in a row, we can provide you with a cellular backup system if you want, or we can install a wireless system in your home or business.

Q.
What is an alarm screen?

A.
An alarm screen is a window screen that looks like an ordinary screen but has an alarm sensor in it. When an intruder attempts to remove it, the monitoring center is notified electronically and the police are called. Alarm screens allow the home owner to keep windows open without having to worry about criminals.

Q.
What is a money clip alarm?

A.
A money clip alarm is a silent alarm that is placed inside a cash register. When money is removed from the tray with the alarm clip, the monitoring center is notified electronically and the police are called.

Q.
How do I update my Emergency Telephone Contact List?

A.
You must fax, email, or mail it to our office. For your safety, we cannot accept the information over the phone.

Q.
I have two battery operated and one hard wired smoke alarms in my home. Is there any reason to have a smoke alarm tied to a security alarm system?

A.
Absolutely. Your existing smoke alarms will probably wake you if you are home sleeping which is obviously important. However, if you are not home, they are next to worthless. Your home may burn. A smoke alarm tied to a burglar alarm system will wake you if you are sleeping and will simultaneously notify the monitoring station. The monitoring station will call the fire department while you are getting out. If you are not home, the system will electronically contact the monitoring station which will contact the fire department in your absence.
